Guzi Mallia was one of the best centre halves of his era. He was an automatic choice for Floriana during their great days before World War One. He also played with his home town Hamrun where he was born in 1885. However his first team was Victoria FC before joining Floriana with whom he won all the honours local footbal could offer at that time. Together with Jack Herbert, he formed one of the greatest left-wing tandems ever seen in Malta. Guzi's brother, Salvu, also played with Floriana and was one of the deadliest strikers of that time. He only spent one season with Hamrun Spartans, when the greens were disbanded
