The Rothmans
Trophy is played as a K.O. between teams
from the Premier and First Division. It
is considered to be the major trophy after
the league crown and the winners compete
in the Cup Winners Cup. The first final
was played in 1935 between Sliema and
Floriana and since then, there were 59
editions of the trophy with Floriana winning
it 18 times, Sliema 17 times, Valletta
9 times, HAMRUN six times, Hibernians
5 times and Melita, Gzira, Zurrieq and
Rabat once.
In 1995, the F.A. Trophy changed its
name to Rothmans Trophy, obviusly since
it is sponsored by Rothmans. This new
Trophy was only won by Valletta on three
occasions.
Since the interception of the Trophy,
only six teams managed to win both the
Championship title and the Trophy in the
same season, with HAMRUN being the only
team to win the "double" in
two successive seasons.
