Sons of Malta Cup
The Sons of Malta Cup
This trophy was donated by Maltese emigrants in New York, to be contested between the previous season's League champions against the Trophy winners. It was probably the largest trophy ever played for in Maltese soccer in terms of size and there were also versions for the Second and Third Divisions. This competiton commenced in season 1967-68 and ran for 13 seasons with Floriana winnig six of the editions and contesting eight of the finals, one more than Sliema Wanderers who appeared in seven finals but only managed to win two. Waning interest brought this competition to an end in season 1979-80 when Sliema were awarded a walk-over Hibernians. Hamrun Spartans never won this honour.
